









These drawings are created as points of connection with ancestors and loved ones who have passed on who I’m trying to maintain community, family or other kinds of relationship with. They look to draw out each person’s energy and presence from traces left behind in objects they owned, loved, or gave to me. I’ve drawn them in charcoal, and chalk found on the beach, some of them from memory. Among these spirits are my late teacher of musical heritage, Norbert Salomon drawn on the traditional Indian Ocean drum, my first mentor of history and archival research, Tony Mathiot, drawn on a scattering of photocopies from the Seychelles Archives, ‘Shellman’ – the Seychelles’ most prolific shell collector, my grandmother in her prayer book, and my great grandfather who is remembered for a sea crossing in a tiny rowboat, on his oar. Behind their closed eyes they are all connected to each other and to me. I don’t fix the images but let them fade, having to redraw them from time to time as part of the maintenance of the relationships.
