The SoulArk Ensemble is a project led by artist Geoffrey Chambers and formed of a collective of artists and musicians based in Margate exploring expansive sounds rooted in Jazz, reggae, hymnals, blues, afrobeat, percussive soul, sega and funk. In the ensemble I play the modern drumkit, congas and the Indian Ocean Sega drum. One of the ensemble’s songs is our adapted version of a traditional Creole song I’ve researched and have begun exploring in a new context amidst a new community on a new coast. Other themes explored within the ensemble are also connected to those I explore in my individual practice – the element of water and our connection to it has been a recurring focus within the ensemble so I’ve decided to include some of our clips and pictures here.
The other core members of the ensemble are Geoffrey Chambers – guitar, bass and vocals. James Hynes – keyboard. Kelly Abbott – percussion and vocals. Elliot Chambers – percussion and vocals. Alia Hamza – vocals.
